Welcome back Royals’ sports fans to another installment of Royal Talk. In this edition we chat with junior-midfielder Daniel Scully from the men’s soccer team. Scully, who is originally from Dublin, Ireland, has helped lead the Royals to back-to-back appearances in The Sun Conference Tournament.
A Sport Management major, Scully has his eyes set on coaching soccer when he is done with school. Here is more of our interview with Daniel Scully:
1) How did you find out about Warner University?
I found out about Warner from a website called Adidas Soccer Scoreboard and from there I made contact with coach and it all went from there.
2) What were some of your concerns adjusting to a new team, a new country, being a college freshman?
It was an easy adjustment for me. My only problem was the heat in Florida. All the players were really nice and made me feel at home.
3) How have you adapted to Coach Bienias and his program in general?
We all love the soccer program here and Coach Kurt runs a tight ship, but we have no problems with it and we just try to listen and play hard for him. And for the last two seasons, we’ve gotten to go to The Sun Conference Tournament.
4) Looking back at your first year, what are some of the things you’ve learned (Sport related)?
I left home to come here and it was the first time out of my house and I had to learn quickly how to take care of myself without my mom picking up after me and washing clothes, etc. I learned how to be more responsible and how to manage situations.
5) How is the style of play different here than from Ireland? Any similarities? No differences?
There are a lot of differences in the game from Ireland. There is a big South American influence here and they like to play short; whereas, in Ireland we like to be more direct. But I love the way we play and it gives me an insight into how other cultures approach the game.
6) Have there been any funny moments for you in practice?
Lots. We are a very close team and like to mess with each other. The funniest ones usually are on birthdays. Coach Fabio is a cheat.
7) What’s been the ‘funniest’ off-the-field moment for you so far?
Jamie ‘Juicy Fruit’ Moore.
8) Describe your feelings on making the postseason the past two years?
We are all really proud to make the Sun Conference Tournament for the second year in a row. We are still hurting from last year’s tournament final against Northwood and are eager to get to Nationals for the first time in Warner Soccer’s history.
9) How are you guys as a team going to approach this year’s postseason as compared to last year?
The same way. We just had a bit of bad luck last year. We approach each game as it comes, and give everything in that game. Last year’s final was just one of those days. We knew we were the better team.
10) How would you describe your athletic experience here at Warner, so far?
Really good. I love playing soccer here. I have made some great friends on the team and because of the team. And as an athlete, I feel I’ve gotten a lot better as a player and have learned a lot of things about the game that I had never even thought about. Warner makes you think about different ways to approach a game.
11) If you could do it over again, what would you do different as a freshman entering college and playing a sport?
Nothing. I was very happy with my freshman year. We had one of the best teams in the country and I was learning from some of the best players Warner has had. Both on and off the field, they were always giving advice and it was great to play with them.
12) If you could compare your style of play to any player (MLS, UEFA, Premier League, etc…), who would it be? Why?
Roy Keane. We both work as hard as we can for our team doing the dirty work.
Be sure to check back on November 4, 2009, for our next installment of Royal Talk.
