Royals Earn First Winning Season on Senior Night

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Warner University women’s volleyball team honored their seniors with a win over Florida Memorial University as they defeated the Lions 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-11) Friday (Nov. 6) in the Turner Athletic Center.  The win improves the Royals to a 15-12 (10-7 The Sun Conference) mark while the Lions drop to 3-17 (2-15 The Sun Conference). The win locked up the Royals first winning season in conference and regular season in the school’s history.

Prior to the match, three seniors were honored: outside hitters Kristy Mentzer and Dayna Sechrest and middle blocker Chinonye Onwuchekwa .

Once the match began, it was business as usual as Jennifer Daun led the Royals attack with seven kills and a .700 hitting percentage; she also protected the front line as she posted three blocks.  Mentzer had one of her best offensive matches of the season as she totaled five kills with a .400 hitting percentage. Sechrest also totaled five kills in the match. 

Setter Ashley Even facilitated the attack, dishing out a match high 21 assists. Defensively, Charmaine Kehoe and Brandi Jarmon led the way with eight and six digs respectively. Natalie Williams played in her first match of the season and helped the Royals on the defensive side as she registered two digs in two sets played.

The Royals return to action Saturday (Nov. 7) as they wrap-up the regular season in a 12 p.m. conference match against St. Thomas University, played in the Turner Athletic Center.

Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.
