Even and Mentzer Honored as NAIA Scholar Athletes

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced that a total of 304 volleyball players have been named 2009 Daktronics-NAIA Volleyball Scholar-Athletes with Ashley Even and Kristy Mentzer representing Warner University.

Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.

 

For the 2009 season, junior Ashley Even was second on the team in assists with 173 and added 16 service aces as the Royals finished the season with a 16-14 record, the first ever winning season for the program.

For senior Kristy Mentzer, this marks the second consecutive year that the outside hitter has been named an NAIA Scholar Athlete.  Mentzer saw action in 22 matches this season and racked up 70 digs helping the Royals to their first ever postseason victory in The Sun Conference Tournament against St. Thomas University.

Athletes of the Week
Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.
