Royals Place Five on Preseason All-Star Team

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Sun Conference has announced the 2010 baseball All-Star Game roster for the exhibition being played Saturday, Jan. 23 in Sliwa Stadium on the campus of Embry-Riddle.  There will be 51 players from 11 Sun Conference teams featured in the game, including seven All-Conference performers from the 2009 season.

Representing Warner University are:

RHP- Brett Stanton

RHP- A.J. Holbeck

C- Cory Johnson (2009 All-Conference Selection)

1B- Dan Smith (2009 All-Conference Selection)

3B- Ryan Carnley

 

Dan Smith is the top offensive returner for the Royals after batting .339 in his junior campaign.  His .458 obp ranks tops amongst players returning and his 17 doubles led the team in 2009.  Cory Johnson led the Royals in 2009 with 11 homeruns and an impressive .545 slugging pct.  In his junior year, he was second on the team with 42 runs batted in.  Ryan Carnley batted .309 for the Royals in 2009 while posting a .396 obp.  He also was second on the team in triples with two.

 

On the mound, A.J. Holbeck went 4-1 with a 6.00 earned run average in 2009 including two complete games.  In Sun Conference play, Holbeck was 1-0 in six starts.  Brett Stanton saw limited action in 2009 while coming back from tommy john surgery.  In 2008, he posted a 4-1 record with a 2.18 era in 41 innings of work.  In conference action, Stanton was impressive with a 0.60 earned-run average and 2-0 record in three appearances.

 

The Royals open the 2010 season on Tuesday, January 26, at Sun Conference newcomer Ave Maria University.  The game is a non-conference matchup starting at 6 p.m.

Athletes of the Week
Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.
