BABSON PARK, Fla. – Playing with an abbreviated lineup, Warner University women’s basketball team turned in their best shooting game of the season en route to defeating cross-town and conference foe Webber International University 83-78 to snap their five game losing streak to the Warriors.
The Royals shot a season-high 49.1% from the field and an impressive 64.7% from behind the arc to move to 9-11 and 3-4 in conference play, already tying their total conference wins from last season while the Warriors drop to 7-10 and 3-4 in conference play.
Erin Henry tied her career high with 19 points and added six assists while four other players also reached double figures in points. Ivana Soberal scored 15 points while going perfect at the line (4-for-4), Karyna Cid and Krystal Glass each poured in 14 points and Christina Howard scored 11 points and grabbed a team high nine boards off the bench.
The Royals took no time imposing their will on the Warriors, jumping out to an early seven-point lead, 15-8 highlighted by three-pointers from Soberal and Cid. The Warriors tied the game at 15 at the 11 minute mark but two free-throws from Soberal returned the lead to the Royals. The teams continued to battle throughout the half until a three from Henry sparked a Royal run that gave Warner a 10-point lead, 33-23. The Warriors cut the lead to five before the Royals closed out the half with four straight points capped off by a jumper from Jazmin Richo to end the half 37-28.
In the second half, the Royals never relinquished their lead. The Warriors were able to tie the game at 53 with 9:31 left in regulation, however the Royals responded with a 9-0 run to keep the lead. Solid free throw shooting from Henry down the stretch gave the Royals the needed victory as she hit seven from the line in the final minute of the game.
The Royals have a needed break from action before returning to the court to face Ave Maria University on Jan. 30 in a 2 p.m. game in the Turner Athletic Center.
