Royals Upended by NAIA-I Voorhees College

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Kierra Patterson hit two free throws in the final second of the game to lift Voorhees College (S.C.) to a 66-65 non-conference win over Warner University Monday night in the Turner Athletic Center.
Patterson, who finished with a team-high 16 points, scored 14 second-half points off the bench to help the Tigers (11-9) overcome a six-point halftime deficit to down the Royals (9-13).
Ivana Soberal had an all-around game scoring a game-high 20 points while grabbing eight rebounds, dishing four assists and snatching two steals in the loss. Erin Henry and Sammie Clark added 11 and 10 points respectively.
Warner went in to the half with a six point cushion, 29-23 and extended their lead to as much as 13, 56-43 through the first 14 minutes of the second half. However, Voorhees would rally behind a 14-6 run to close the gap to five points, 62-57 with 1:57 remaining in the game. Christina Howard hit two free-throws to extend Warner’s advantage to seven points.
From that point, the Tigers rallied off seven consecutive points sparked by a trey from RaShonda Mayfield to knot the game at 64-64 with only 10 seconds left in the game. With only six seconds left in regulation, Soberal was fouled and hit one-of-two free throws to give the Royals a one-point lead, 65-64. On the next possession Mary Cason was fouled while driving down the court in attempt to win the game. Cason who was hurt on the play could not shoot her free throws and was subbed out for Patterson who knocked down the two shots despite a loud Turner Athletic Center.
The Royals look to break out of their losing slump when they return to conference play Friday (Feb. 5) when they host St. Thomas University in a 5 p.m. game during Homecoming Weekend.
