Softball Wins Season Opener

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Showing no signs of rust, All-Conference pitcher Rebecca Powell pitched a gem of a game as she led the Warner University softball team to a 3-0 win over Ave Maria University Friday afternoon at Daly Field. The Royals open their season at 1-0 while the Gyrenes drop to 4-3 for the season.

Powell started on the mound for the Royals and tallied a career-high 10 strikeouts while giving up only two hits over five innings pitched. She along with Samantha Swofford , Nikki Helms and Kaitlyn Grimail shutdown the Gyrenes high-powered offense, who coming into today’s game was averaging more than six runs a game.

The Gyrenes also received a strong pitching effort from their starter, Samantha Crews who only allowed four hits over six innings pitched.

Leading the Royals at the plate were Danielle Fennimore , Tabatha Martin , Franki Grimes , and Jennifer Rioseco with one hit apiece. Fennimore finished with two RBI’s while Sun Conference Player of the Year Hope Franklin batted in the other run for the Royals.

Due to the weather conditions tonight’s exhibition game between the Royals and the Community College of Baltimore-County-Dundalk has been canceled and the Royals will return to the diamond tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. for another showdown with Ave Maria University.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.

Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.
