Royals Defeated by St. Thomas University

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Warner University women’s basketball suffered a 65-53 conference loss to St. Thomas University Friday afternoon in the Turner Athletic Center in the opening game of the 2010 Warner University Homecoming. The Royals now drop to 9-14 in the season while the Bobcats improve to 14-7.

Ivana Soberal led all scorers with 19 points while Karyna Cid poured in 13 points and dished five assists. Christina Howard led the Royals on the boards with eight rebounds. St. Thomas was led in scoring by the Cindy Castrillon and Alexandria Vanterpool, the duo scored 15 points apiece.

In the first half the Royals and Bobcats played back-and-forth as there were five ties and six lead changes. The Bobcats were able to close out the half up six, 37-31 and never looked back as they were able to push their cushion in the second half to double digits.

The Royals shot 43.8% from behind the arc compared to the Bobcats 37.5% but it was not enough as the the Bobcats dominated the Royals in the paint scoring 32 of their 65 points in the area, compared to the Royals scoring only eight points in the paint. The Bobcats also received a strong effort from their bench as their bench outscored the Royals bench 28-6.

The Royals return to action Saturday (Feb. 6) for a 2 p.m. tipoff against Florida Memorial University in the Turner Athletic Center.

Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.
