Men's Tennis Opens 2010 Season

LAKE WALES, Fla. - The Warner University men's tennis team opened their 2010 season over the weekend on the road at two tough Sun Conference opponents, St. Thomas University and cross-town rival Webber International University.  The Royals were defeated in both contest and now stand at 0-2.

On Saturday, February 6, the Royals faced the Bobcats of St. Thomas and lossed 9-0 despite playing very competitive matches all the way around.

On Sunday, February 7, the Royals were in action against cross-town and Sun Conference rival Webber International University.  The Royals would fall again 8-1.

In #1 singles action, Akharis Sa-ardphanchai was victorious giving Warner University men's tennis their first win in # 1 singles history.  Head coach Jose Martinez had this to say about the victory:

"Akharis played a tremendous match.  He played with discipline and attacked at all the right moments."

Coach Martinez offered this statement about the future of the program, "We are a very young team with our top 6 all being freshman.  I look forward to watching these talented individuals grow on and off the court over the next several years."  

The Royals will host their first match of the year this Saturday, Feb. 13, against Northwood University.  Matches start at 12 p.m.

Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.

Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.
