Welcome back Royals sports fans to another installment of Royal Talk. In this edition we sit down and speak with Jessica Osegueda , a freshman on the women’s track and field team. The Cape Coral, Fla. native is a Sports Management major and plans to work in Community Relations for a sports team, her dream job would be to work with the Orlando Magic, planning events with charities. Here is more of the interview with Osegueda:
1) What brought you to Warner? What was some of the deciding factors when you chose to attend Warner?
I saw Warner at a college fair that I attended and it kept popping into my head out of all the colleges I saw. I decided to visit it and I had a feeling that I belonged here. Therefore I chose this college; I believe God wanted me to come to Warner.
2) How long have you been competing in track and field and what is your favorite event to compete in and why?
I’ve only done Track and Field In middle school. I decided to walk on and give it a try in college. My favorite event to compete in is the 4x4 relay because the fans are usually hyped about relays and are loud and that gives me more motivation and gets me hyped as well. I think its fun because it’s not just running you are also passing a baton which makes it a little different.
3) As a freshman what were some of your expectations for yourself this season?
As a freshman walk-on I honestly didn’t have any expectations. I knew I had a lot of catching up and training to do so I didn’t want to set my expectations high. I just wanted to learn and persevere no matter what the outcome.
4) You recently broke your personal records in the 400M Dash, Long Jump and Pole Vault, what was your initial reaction after reaching those feats?
I was extremely happy, especially since I saw all those practices and long days at work pay off and it motivated me even more to know that over time I will get better.
5) How has Coach Gonzalez helped in your progression over the season?
Coach Gonzalez had faith in me even when I didn’t have faith in myself. She always motivated me and told me not worry. She has taught me a lot and I am very grateful that she has made me a part of the team.
6) Have there been any teammates that have been like a big sister/brother and that helped you in your transition to college?
Yes, many of my teammates have helped me in some way.
7) You have The Sun Conference Championships coming up this Sunday; have you set any goals for yourself and the team in the competition?
I have set goals for myself and the team, one is to give it my all and no matter what the outcome still have a smile on my face because as long as I know I did my best that is all I can do. My team goal is for everyone to stay consistent or do better with their times because that is how we get better.
8) How would you describe your athletic experience here at Warner thus far?
I have enjoyed being an athlete at Warner. My coach is nice and she is good at what she does and my teammates are friendly and are like family to me.
9) What’s your most memorable moment so far?
My most memorable moments so far were beating my personal record in the 4x400 relay at the Walt Disney World Invitational and taking a picture with Tyson Gay at the University of Miami Alumni Invitational.
10) When your collegiate career at Warner is complete, how do you want to be remembered?
I want to be remembered as the walk-on that never gave up and the teammate that would always have everyone’s back.
