FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Warner University Royals baseball team placed five players on the All-Conference team for The Sun Conference on Saturday night. Representing the Royals on the second team were outfielders Hunter Reed and Justin Zanella, first baseman Dan Smith and pitcher Anthony Machado. Cory Johnson was the Royals lone selection on the first team. Smith and Johnson are repeat winners as they were both named All-Conference selections last year.
Reed, a first year player for Warner University, finished the regular season with a .333 batting average and led the team with 47 RBIs, 24 of which came in Sun Conference play. He was also spectacular on defense for the Royals totaling seven outfield assists.
As a sophomore, Zanella led the Royals in several statistical categories including batting average, runs scored, triples, total bases, slugging percentage and on-base-percentage. He finished with a team best .347 average including seven homeruns. He led the team with a .620 slugging percentage and a remarkable .515 on-base-percentage. Zanella also caused problems on the base paths totaling 21 steals to also lead the team.
Smith was second on the team in hitting with a .335 average and finished tied with Reed for hits with 55 during the regular season. Smith was most dangerous in Sun Conference play where he batted .345 with three homeruns and 19 RBIs while slugging over .500 (.513).
Machado, like Smith, was at his best in conference play. He finished with a 6-1 record in conference (6-5 overall) with a team best 3.16 era (3.19 overall). He finished second on the team with five complete games and led the staff with 79.0 innings pitched.
Johnson backed up last year’s All Conference campaign with a .321 average in 2010 including a team best eight homeruns. His .577 slugging percentage was good enough for second on the team while also posting a .436 on-base-percentage.
