LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Warner University women’s basketball head coach Matt Murphy rounded out the 2010-11 signing class with the recent addition of Candace Smith of Coalville, Utah.
Smith, a 5’11 guard/forward joins the Royals after three years with perennial NAIA-I powerhouse Westminster College (Utah). While at Westminster, Smith helped the Griffins to three consecutive trips to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament and an overall record of 78-23 over the three-year time frame. She scored double figures five times including a career high 17 points this past season. Smith also boasted a 3.5 GPA during her time at Westminster earning her a place on the Dean’s List.
“After three great years at Westminster, I have been blessed with another great opportunity to sign and play for Warner University. I am very excited to play for a coach that I have so much respect for and with girls of such high caliber. I am eagerly anticipated a great season both on and off the court,” said Smith.
Prior to attending Westminster, Smith played her high school ball at North Summit High School where she averaged 14.5 ppg. She earned First Team All-State honors her senior year after earning Second Team All-State honors as a junior. Smith proved to be exceptional in the classroom as well, earning a 4.0 GPA and winning the Utah Sterling Scholar Competition.
“It is unusual to get a player with just one year left of eligibility but Candace is the type of player that will be a great fit and will enhance our program. She brings valuable experience at the national level that could really compliment our returning players,” stated Murphy.
