Royals Welcomes More to Track & Field Family

The Warner University track and field family expanded by four this weekend as head coach Emperatriz Gonzalez announced the signing of Sakeema McCray (Largo High School), Wadson Meme (Dunbar High School), Tavius Ferguson (Miami Coral Park High School), Shaniqua Pass (Clewiston High School), Christopher Louis (Upperroom Christian), David Gordon (Upperroom Christian) and Brandy Gordon (Palmetto High School) to her 2010-11 recruiting class.

All seven enter Warner as freshmen and with solid high school credentials.

McCray joins the Royals after earning All-Pinellas County Second Team honors in the 100M Hurdles and Honorable Mention distinction in the Triple Jump; she was one of only two Largo girls’ student-athletes to earn All-County honors this season. McCray had an exceptional senior year, boasting first place finishes in the 100M Hurdles at the West Coast Invitational and 2010 FHSAA 3A District 10 Championships, including breaking her personal record with a time of 15.97 in the preliminaries of the FHSAA 3A District 10 meet. She would go on to compete in the 100M Hurdles and Triple Jump at the 2010 FHSAA 3A Track & Field Championships where she set her personal record in the Triple Jump with a distance of 35’7.50. McCray also competed in the 300M Hurdles, Long Jump and on the 4X100M relay team while at Largo and will compete in the 400M Hurdles while at Warner.

Meme earned The News-Press All Area Boys Track & Field Honorable Mention honors his senior year after wrapping up his prep career by helping Dunbar set their season best time in the 4X100 relay race at the FHSAA 2A District 11 Championships with a time of 43.52 in the prelims. He would go on to lead the 4X100 relay team to a third place finish in the finals, clocking a time of 43.81, their fourth best time of the season. Meme also ran the 100m Dash and 200m Dash during his prep career at Dunbar, setting his personal records at 11.40 and 23.19 seconds respectively. While at Warner, he will compete in the 100M Dash and run for the cross country team in the fall.

Ferguson, a diverse runner for Coral Park ran the 400M Dash, 5000 Meter Run and was a member of the 4X400M relay team during his prep career. As a junior, he set his personal record in the 400M Dash, running 53.27 seconds in the 2009 FHSAA 4A District 14 Championships. He culminated his prep career with a seventh place finish in the 400M Dash and helping the 4X400M Relay team to a fourth place finish at the 2010 FHSAA 4A District Championships with a time of 54.56 and 3:48.94 respectively. Ferguson competed in the 5000 Meter race his sophomore year and set his personal record with a time of 19:41. He will run in the 400M, 800M and compete on the cross country team in the fall.

Pass competed in both track and field events while at Clewiston, running in the 100M and 200M, competed with the4X100M and 4X400M relay teams and competed in the High Jump and Long Jump. In her junior season, she had a record breaking performance at the 2008 FHSAA 2A District 11 Championships, setting her personal best times in the 100M and 200M with times of 13.04 and 26.85 respectively. During her senior campaign, she helped Clewiston’s 4X100M and 4X400M Relay teams advance to the 2009 FSHAA 2A Regionals 3 Finals where they finished seventh and eighth respectively. While at Warner she will continue to run in the 100M, 200M and 4X100M Relay races.

Louis and David Gordon were members of the 4X400M Relay team that led Upperroom to a first place finish at the FHSAA 1A Finals after they clocked a time of 3:28.21. Louis also competed in the High Jump while the state meet, finishing with a jump of 5-08. Gordon was a silver medalist in the Long Jump, leaping 23-03. 

Brandy Gordon competed in the 100M Dash, 200M Dash and Long Jump while at Palmetto. In her senior campaign she qualified for the FHSAA 3A Region Championships in the 100M Dash after winning the silver medal in the event with a time of 12.55 and helping Palmetto earn the top three spots in the event. Earlier in the season she set her personal record in the 100M at the Pepsi Florida Relays with a time of 12.49. Gordon also set her personal best in the 200M this season at the Disney Invitational with a time of 26.03. She had early success in the Long Jump, setting her personal best as a sophomore with a jump of 14-5.5 at the Wally Keller Invitational.

Warner’s women earned a second place finish at the 2010 The Sun Conference Championships improving on their third place finish from the 2009 season while the men’s team finished third at the conference meet for the second consecutive year.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.

Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.
