In a new feature, the Warner Sports Information Department will highlight a game/match/event of the week played by one of the Warner teams and to kick the feature off we will highlight Wednesday’s men’s soccer match versus cross-town rival Webber International.

Playing their first match of the season, the Royals collide with their cross-town rival Wednesday in a non-conference match to help decide who takes home the 2010 Crooked Lake Cup trophy at the end of the season. In an already heated rivalry, Warner head coach Kurt Bienias, Webber International head coach Neil Cockburn and Cup sponsor Pizzanos of Lake Wales have decided to add fuel to the rivalry by introducing a home and away contest that will determine the first winner of the Crooked Lake Cup Championship.

The two teams will play a home and away match against each other and the team with the best overall record (to include aggregate scoring) will host the trophy for the remaining academic year.  In addition, the yearly winner will put their school’s name on the trophy and after the academic year, it will be returned to Pizzanos and competed for again the next year.  The team with the best three-year record will get to keep the trophy for good after the third year.

The Royals have dominated the Warriors over the past five seasons, boasting a 6-3 record over their previous nine matches. However their last match was a close one as it took a goal in the 85th minute of regulation to break the 1-1 stalemate to give the Royals their third consecutive win over the Warriors.
