LAKE WALES, Fla. – In the first athletic event of the 2010-11 school year the Warner University men’s soccer team opened the athletic season with a 1-0 win over cross-town rival Webber International University in a non-conference match to kickoff the first leg of the Pizzano’s Crooked Lake Cup Championship Wednesday (Sept. 1) at Royals Field.
Playing in their first match of the season, the Royals played a bit frantic in the opening minutes but settled down through the first half, once settled the Royals controlled the tempo of the first frame outshooting the Warriors 6-1 in the half.
The Royals constantly pressured the Warriors defense in the half, keeping their cross-town rival on their toes until in the 35th minute when reserve midfielder Renato Herrerias sent a perfect ball from the left side of the field into the center, finding freshman midfielder Carlo Coelho where the Perth, Australia native rocketed the ball in to the back of the net for the Royals first goal of the season and to give the Warner the final lead 1-0.
In the second half, the Warriors were able to make adjustments and countered by attacking the Royals defense, taking five shots in the half with one on goal, however the Royals backline proved too strong holding steady the entire half to preserve the shutout.
Jonathan Romero started in goal and played the entire 90 minutes making one save.

The Warner men return to the pitch this weekend as they travel to Wilson, N.C. to face NCAA-II Barton College (N.C.) in a 7 p.m. match Friday.
