Cross Country Opens 2010 Season at UT Early Bird Classic

VALRICO, Fla. – The Warner University cross country opened their 2010 season with a sixth place finish by the men and a ninth place finish for the women at the University of Tampa Early Bird Classic Friday afternoon at the Sydney-Dover Trails in Valrico, Fla. Meet host University of Tampa won the event on the men’s and women’s side.

Leading the pack for the Royals men was two-time NAIA Nationals qualifier Orssie Bumpus as he crossed the finish line 14th in 23:49.28. Sophomore Jonathan Woods followed with a time of 27:08.47 and Darveen Seide was third to cross the finish line for the Royals, clocking a time of 27:45.84. Courtney Davis (29:53.03), Jaeden Hamernik (31:10.12), Anthony Chiminiello (33:00.22) and Ricardo Martinez (35:25.06) finished strong for the Royals to close out the Warner men’s scoring.

On the women’s side, Ashley Barstow and senior Rhonda Rininger ran shoulder-to-shoulder for the majority of the 5k race, until the final stretch where Barstow edged Rininger to cross the finish line at 25:39 and Rininger finished at 25:46. Moriah Blanford followed clocking in at 25:46 while Jessica Osegueda kept a solid pace to finish at 29:14. Newcomer Acacia Sanaster clocked in at 31:02 while Manolitha Joseph , Joane Petithomme and Unique Williams also competed for the Royals.

The Royals will have 22 days to work on shaving their times down as they will return to the course Saturday, September 25 when they compete at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando, Fla.; start time is slated for 8 a.m.

Mark St. Fort
Men's Basketball

Mark St. Fort has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  St. Fort helped the No. 23 ranked men’s basketball team to a 1-1 week in The Sun Conference play.  Against No. 2 Northwood University, St. Fort scored nine points with six rebounds in a tough 82-58 loss to the Seahawks.  Then on Saturday night, St. Fort had a monster game against Florida Memorial University.  The Royals overcame a 43-38 halftime deficit defeating the Lions 82-74.  St. Fort’s second half performance helped lift the Royals’ offense; the Wauchula, Fla. native tallied 25 points in the second half.  The junior finished the game with 29 points and 12 rebounds to record the double-double.

Ethan  Lovell
Baseball

Ethan Lovell has been named the Warner University Athlete of the Week for games played Jan. 23-29.  Lovell helped the Royals baseball squad to a season opening split at Webber International University on Saturday (Jan. 28).  The Royals dropped the first game of the doubleheader 6-2 but rallied to take the second game 5-2.  Lovell got his senior season off on the right foot, batting 4-for-7 (.571) in both games.  The Lithia, Fla. native had a double and a triple while also scoring three runs.  Starting in centerfield for the Royals, Lovell recorded five put-outs as well.
